GREAT TEXAS WINEMAKERS

Dateline: March, 2004
Behind The Scenes with:
Richard Becker

Upon buying the old Weber place in Stonewall, Richard and his wife Bunny realized their dream of owning a farm in the Hill Country, though a vineyard and winery were the last things on their mind. Richard is the first to admit that the reason they started experimenting with a vineyard is not clear to either of them, other than his efforts to match wine with Bunny's excellent French cooking.

After talking with other winemakers in the area and enlisting Enrique Ferro, a Califonia wine consultant, the Beckers planted a 13-acre experimental vineyard. A frequent visitor to the French wine country, Richard recognized a similarity between the Texas Hill Country and the Rhone Valley in France, nudging him to plant Rhone varietals, such as Viognier, Syrah, Mourvedre, Grenache, Roussanne and Marsanne..

Winemaking Style

Initially Richard used consultants to help him develop a line of wines that he was pleased with and knew that he could work to improve upon with time. Today, Richard's developed palate guides the production of Becker Vineyards wines, though he admits that he sollicits the opinion of friends and family when creating new vintages. Considering the awards that Becker Vineyards consistently wins, he must be doing something right.
